My absolute favorite way to prepare watermelon and eat is by grilling it! I hadn’t tried this until a few years ago and fell in love with the flavor and texture. It caramelizes the sugars and adds a great char flavor that makes it so fun to eat. If you have never tried it, definitely make it a point to throw some watermelon slices on the grill this summer.

Key Steps:

  1. The Perfect Watermelon for Grilling:

Before you fire up the grill, it’s essential to choose the right watermelon. Look for a ripe watermelon with a vibrant color and a hollow sound when tapped. A firm texture and symmetrical shape are also good indicators of a quality watermelon. Also look for a yellow spot and webbing, this means the watermelon is sweet.

  1. Preparing the Watermelon:

Start by cutting the watermelon into thick slices, approximately 1 inch in thickness. Preheating the grill to medium-high heat is crucial to achieving those beautiful grill marks while keeping the fruit juicy on the inside.

  1. Adding Flavor with Marinades:

While watermelon is delicious on its own, you can enhance its taste by marinating it before grilling. A simple marinade consisting of lime juice, honey, and a sprinkle of chili powder can elevate the flavors and add a tangy kick. Allow the watermelon slices to marinate for about 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate. Or if you are lazy like me, just use oil and salt.

  1. Grilling Technique:

Once your grill is hot and the watermelon slices have absorbed the marinade, it’s time to grill them. Place the slices directly on the grill grates, keeping the rind side up for the first few minutes. This technique helps retain the natural juices. After a couple of minutes, flip the slices and grill the rind side for another 2-3 minutes until grill marks appear. Be careful not to overcook the watermelon as it may become mushy.

  1. Experiment with Toppings and Sides:

Grilled watermelon is a versatile ingredient that can be served in various ways. You can enjoy it as a standalone snack or get creative with toppings and sides. Consider adding crumbled feta cheese, fresh mint leaves, and a drizzle of balsamic reduction. Alternatively, you can serve it alongside a mixed green salad or as a refreshing addition to grilled chicken skewers.
