BBQ pulled pork is great, but sometimes I am too lazy to whip out my smoker and smoke pork for 8 hours. If you are looking for pulled pork that is easier than the smoker version, try out this oven version!

What Kind of Pork to Buy:

The best cut of pork for pulled pork is pork shoulder, also known as “Boston Butt.” In this recipe I used boneless, but you can also use bone in, just know this may affect cooking time and yields less pork, but some say cooking with bone in makes for better flavor.

Tips for Better Oven BBQ Pork:

  • Salt / season the day before. This will help with better flavor because the salt has time to permeate the pork.
  • Cook no higher than 325*F. For best texture you want to cook pork low and slow to break down the collagen and fat.
  • Good rule of thumb is cook 1 hour per pound of pork. In this case I have a three pound pork shoulder, so I cooked it for 3 hours.
  • Always cook until the pork is very tender and easily falls apart. If you pull it out after the three hours and it still seems tough, place it back in the oven and check every thirty minutes.

  • SERVINGS:  6-8
  • PREP TIME: 5 Mins
  • ACTIVE TIME: 3 Hrs
  • TOTAL TIME: 3 Hrs

Ingredients:

  • 3 lb boneless pork shoulder
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp ground pepper
  • 2 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tsp chipotle powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • BBQ Sauce

Preparation:

STEP 1.

Prepare the pork. Mix all the spices together and coat the pork in an even layer of the bbq rub. Let it sit overnight in the fridge.

STEP 2.

Preheat the oven to 325*F.

STEP 3.

Place pork in a dutch oven and place the lid on top. Place in the oven and cook for 3 hours. After 3 hours remove from the oven and check for fork tenderness. If it easily shreds, it is ready. If it is still tough, place back in the oven with a lid on for another 30 minutes or until tender.

STEP 4.

Remove from the pot and shred with your hands or tools, be careful it is hot! Mix in your favorite bbq sauce and serve.
