If you’ve never had Waffle House hash browns, you’re seriously missing out. I have fond memories of my high school friends and I downing waffles and hash browns in a Waffle House booth late at night – the highlight of course being the hash browns. They are thin, crispy, salty and also quite easy to make at home.
Key Ingredients & Substitutions:
- Russet Potatoes – This recipe works best with russet potatoes because they are higher in starch and get crispier, however any white potato will work.
- Avocado Oil – This is my favorite oil for high smoke point cooking, however any high smoke point oil will work such as grapeseed.

Waffle House Hash Browns
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Serves: 4-6
Ingredients:
- 2 russet potatoes, peeled and grated on a large grater
- 2 Tbsp – 1/4 cup Avocado oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation:
STEP 1.
Add the shredded potatoes to a bowl and fill with water. Stir around with your hands to release extra starch. Strain through a strainer and do this until the water runs clear, around 2-3 more times.
STEP 2.
Using a cloth, work in batches to squeeze out all of the excess water and set aside in a new bowl.
STEP 3.
In a stainless steel pan over medium high heat, add avocado to coat the bottom of the pan. Once the oil is hot, add a small handful and spread into a large patty. Press down with a spatula to flatten and form together. Season with salt and pepper all over. Cook on this side for 2-5 minutes or until golden brown on the bottom. Once golden, flip over.
STEP 4.
Cook for another 3-5 minutes on the second side until it is crispy. Remove from the pan and set aide. Repeat this with all of the potatoes.
STEP 5.
Serve and enjoy!
